The Sun Has Got His Hat On: Protect Your Baby!
Isn’t it exciting that the sun is starting to make an appearance more than just once a month? This means more trips out to the park and exciting adventures with the little one. This can all seem very exciting, but as you know, the sun also means you need to take extra care of protecting your babies skin. Your baby or child’s skin can be extra sensitive to the sun, and there is a lot of misleading information online on how to treat your baby’s soft skin. We are here to clear up the conflicting information and give you some all-round advice!
Your baby or child’s skin can be extra sensitive to the sun, and there is a lot of misleading information online on how to treat your baby’s soft skin. We are here to clear up the conflicting information and give you some all-round advice!
Sun-Screen
For a younger baby (0-6 months) it is generally best to keep them out of the sun altogether. For an older baby, you should choose a cream with at least SPF 15 and make sure it protects both UVA and UVB rays (look for the broad-spectrum label) Babies have more sensitive skin, so maybe choose a ‘physical’ sun cream, and avoid all the chemicals which the skin can absorb. Double check the packaging before committing!
Parasol!
A canopy or parasol will protect your baby perfectly and is a simple and fun accessory! This way, it can mean you can protect your babies skin from the harsh direct sunlight and keep their eyes shaded away from the light. With a little adjustment, a parasol can be colour-pop perfection on the side of the pram! You can also buy sun and sleep shades, which allows you baby to be cool in shade- letting them catch a few z’s. Don’t forget about protection when travelling in the car too!
You should keep your little one appropriately covered up. You may think a little strappy cami dress is the cutest outfit, but don’t forget about the sun hat and the sun cream to go with it. A hat with a wide rim or one that covers their neck is better! It may also be hot through the day, but as the day goes on it can get much cooler; so be sure to carry a cardigan or jacket.
Don’t forget to keep your baby hydrated and relaxed in the hot days. No one wants an upset, overheated, sunburnt child on your hands. Make sure you check nappies for wetness- because if they aren’t frequently damp enough, they aren’t hydrated enough. Keep plenty of water and milk in the pram along with the sun hat and sun cream.
